As our world depresses and despises us, being included becomes all the more precious.

GUIDANCE

And we are.  A place at His table.  All the family gathered.  Forever protected by our Father-King.

PERSPECTIVE

"And you were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.  Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of his glory" (Ephesians 1:13-14 NIV).

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

We may not be wanted here.  But that's okay.  HE includes us.

Only God knows the subterranean differences between good and evil

GUIDANCE

We know only a tiny part of His infinite perspective.  So when we make decisions, we must seek His guidance.

PERSPECTIVE

Not like the first Adam who consumed the worldly wisdom that tells us we know best what we should do.

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

But like the second Adam who said: "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work" (John 4:34 NIV).

Impossible!

GUIDANCE

Way beyond anything that could ever be conceived.

PERSPECTIVE

But, yes, there He was.  And Mary kissed the tiny face of God

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

Romano Guardini in his book, The Lord, points out that one day we may be able to understand the inexplicable mystery of Christ's Incarnation.  How the infinite God became a defenseless baby.

But for now, like Mary, we simply embrace the truth that "love does such things" (p. 19).

I like the way Richard Foster said it.

GUIDANCE

"Leadership is found in becoming the servant of all. Power is discovered in submission.  The foremost symbol of this radical servanthood is the cross" (Celebration of Discipline, p. 101).

PERSPECTIVE

My prayer in this New Year is that we will live more this way.  Giving Him more glory.  Listening better. Expressing more gratitude.  Improving our serve.

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

Amazing, isn't it?  This kind of dying is really living!

The greatest EVER transfer of wealth.

GUIDANCE

Our Heavenly Father owned everything He created from all eternity.  Then Jesus radically stated: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me: (Matthew 28:18 NIV).

But Why would God give everything away?

PERSPECTIVE

Satan claims that now he deserves to own our world because we serve him rather than our God and Father.

So, to keep our family name sacred, God does the unthinkable.  He gives everything away to Jesus.

Therefore Satan no longer has a case that God cannot own everything.  Because He doesn't!  The Father has given it all to the Son.  Something that evil would never even consider.  His family honor is preserved completely from even the most flimsy accusations of wrongdoing!!

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

And someday soon there will be a wedding feast in which the Son restores all creation into the loving hands of our Father.  With our family complete in every way.

Because His family means more to Him than everything.

The entire city was disturbed by the news.

GUIDANCE

In fact, those in power immediately started disaster planning when they heard the news.

PERSPECTIVE

Then, all boys found in Bethlehem who were under two years old were killed because of the news (Matthew 2:16).

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

And what we call the good news still causes persecution and death today.  Today's power brokers still cringe at the possibility of His coming into their countries.

I can't help but wonder.  Do we really want such a divisive Person in our country?

We are blessed.

Guidance

And some of our greatest blessings from the hand of our Heavenly Father include being chosen, adopted, forgiven, revealed to, and lavished upon by His rich grace (Ephesians 1:3-13).

Perspective

In spite of our stubborn, sinful tendencies, He still holds open wide His waiting arms to welcome us home.

Strength for the journey

I find myself increasingly homesick these days.

A seat at His table.  A good, forever family.  Included in His plans.  Such a King doesn't have to make His home with us (John 14:23).

But, oh what a blessing that He does!

Total transparency.  Nothing hidden.

Guidance

Every emotion, deepest drives, and wildest thoughts open for all to see.

Perspective

Such intimate communion with our Father and His saints is heaven.  Free to love and to be loved forever.

On the other hand, such intimate communion with the devil and his followers is hell.  Bound to hate and to be hated forever.

Strength for the journey

Here is the deal.  If we do not want His Holy Presence now, we will not have His Holy Presence later.

And, that is hell.

Any good king expects it to happen.

Guidance

So he gives his children a worldview.  A way to look at reality from his perspective.

Perspective

Our Heavenly Father is no exception.  He gave us such a template in the form of a prayer.  Like small children we begin "trying it on" for size.  It just seems like ill-fitting phrases at first.  Be we can grow into it.

Strength for the journey

With devoted daily practice, what we call the Lord's Prayer can become our template for living.  When it does, our priorities and values become more His.

It's your birthright.  So please, try it on daily!

How can we be good stewards?

Guidance

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth"  (Matthew 28:18 NKJB).

And He stewards all authority in heaven and earth with complete honor!

So is it possible for us to follow His example and steward what God has given us honorably?

Perspective

Do we even have a prayer?

Strength for the journey

Actually, we do.

One that should keep us honest:  "Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen"  (Matthew 6:13 NKJB).

Matter matters.

Guidance

"And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being" (Genesis 2:7 NIV).

Perspective

Our resurrected bodies are eternal.

"Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; see my hands.  Reach out your hand and put it into my side.  Stop doubting and believe"' (John 20:27 NIV).

Strength for the journey

Just like His nail-pierced hands and wounded side, what we do in the body goes with us.

What we become here determines some of what we are there.

It matters.

His amazing grace, like cozy sunbeams and restful rainfall, is easy to miss.

GUIDANCE

In our poverty and weakness, we often just rely upon it without thinking and thanking.  Partly because it's so normal.  Tiny arms around the neck, a saint's peaceful homegoing, forgiveness from a friend, a wreck avoided by a still, soft voice.

PERSPECTIVE

Like gravity, grace gives us balance, creates stability, and basically keeps us down to earth.  But we forget.  Like the air we breathe.  Essential for survival, but taken for granted.  We're dead without it, but forget we need it..

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

His grace is like the binding force holding everything together.  Unseen, yet radically essential.  His grace resurrects good from evil.  It plants, feeds, heals, waters, prunes, and quickens our lives.  But His unpretentious grace works so humbly, we usually just walk right by it without a word of thanks.

Forgetting that it provides everything we really need to get us through.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV).

Father, this day we pause for a moment to say THANK YOU for your beams of love that gently soak our lives with your grace.  We love you!  In Jesus we give thanks.  Amen.

How do we do good work?

GUIDANCE

Death stalks us,
Time overtakes us,
Sin hinders us,
And wisdom eludes us.

PERSPECTIVE

Fortunately, Psalm 90 shows us a place where His work, power, and favor can establish us.

STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY

"Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations" (Psalm 90:1 NIV).

"May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands"

(Psalm 90:17 NIV).
