 GPS JOURNAL

Dear Friend,

Of course we want our faith to grow stronger.
  But how?
Jesus tells us:  "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you."
Luke 17:6 (NIV)

GUIDANCE
But, HOW do you get faith that can work this powerfully?

In answer to this question Jesus tells us a story:  "Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep.  Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'?  Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink;  after that you may eat and drink'?  Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?  So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"
                                                  Luke 17:7-10 (NIV)

PERSPECTIVE
But, it does not seem to make sense, does it?

What does being an obedient, unselfish servant have to do with getting the mulberry tree into the sea?
STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY
Not much if our goal is to move mountains or toss trees in an effort to  impress others with our spiritual prowess.

But what if faith is something that first moves and uproots us?  Something that, when used, transforms us into increasingly obedient, unselfish servants.

What if our growing faith in Him then strengthens us to keep plowing through the heat of the day.  To more effectively keep His sheep safe and growing.  To better serve His needs and Kingdom.  Without fanfare or self-serving motives.  What if such faith is simply a whole-hearted and whole-headed choice to obediently and unselfishly serve Him more and better as we continue the journey?

Not belief when convenient.  But life fully committed.  Spiritual exercise that keeps us growing stronger and stronger.

Over time, this type of faithful living can indeed uproot what needs to be weeded from His fields and move the mountains that block His progress.

The story is the perfect answer to the question.  Obedient, unselfish service is exactly the exercise we need to strengthen our faith!
